A Nigerian content creator has refused an offer to become a youth ambassador for Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) after being told he would no longer be allowed to openly criticise the commission.
However, his excitement quickly gave way to concern. Since his content focuses heavily on political analysis and criticism, including scrutiny of electoral institutions, he asked whether accepting the role would limit his ability to speak freely about INEC. He was told that while he could promote voter registration and civic engagement, direct criticism of the commission would not be allowed.
That condition made him reconsider, and he ultimately declined the offer.
He explained that accepting such restrictions would clash with the core of his work and the trust he has built with his audience. While acknowledging the prestige of the role and expressing appreciation to those who recommended him, he emphasized that he could not sacrifice his independence for a title. He also noted he would remain open to partnerships that do not restrict his voice.
His decision has sparked broader discussions about creative independence, influence, and the expectations placed on public figures who take on institutional roles. Meanwhile, INEC has not issued any official response regarding the situation.
