Cubana Chief Priest Joins the “City Boy” Movement
Cubana Chief Priest has been given a new political role in Imo State as the Director of the City Boy Movement. This happened not long after he showed interest in being part of the political group ahead of the 2027 elections.

He isn’t the only celebrity involved. Earlier, Seyi Tinubu, the son of President Bola Tinubu, gave Obi Cubana a similar role as the South-East coordinator of the same movement. According to the City Boy Movement, Cubana Chief Priest was chosen because they believe he can help promote President Tinubu’s plans and campaign for another term in 2027.
Normally, a “City Boy” refers to a stylish, confident, hardworking young man who enjoys city life, hustles for success, and is socially active.
In politics, however, the City Boy Movement is a group created to attract and organise young Nigerians in support of President Tinubu and his government, especially as the next elections approach.
The name also became popular through Burna Boy’s song City Boy, which talks about independence, hustle, and doing things your own way. Although the song isn’t political, its message fits the image the movement wants to use to appeal to young people.
Basically, the movement is using a familiar youth identity — ambition, hustle, and visibility — to connect with young Nigerians.

Around the world, it’s common for celebrities to get involved in politics because they already have large audiences. Politicians often rely on famous people to help spread their message.
For example, American rapper Nicki Minaj openly supported former US President Donald Trump by appearing at events with him and praising his leadership. This shows how fame and politics often mix.
In Nigeria, what stands out is how quickly popular lifestyle figures are being given official roles in political groups.
Cubana Chief Priest is known for his flashy lifestyle — expensive clothes, luxury events, and viral social media moments. He often trends online for wearing outfits worth millions of naira, even at a time when many Nigerians are struggling financially.
He has also been involved in public online feuds, like his exchange with Burna Boy, and is often seen with top entertainers and politicians. Videos of him with Davido, President Tinubu, and Obi Cubana regularly go viral.
Because he is always in the public eye, especially on social media, the movement believes he can easily reach young people and spread political messages.

Mobilising young people politically isn’t just about popularity. It involves discussing real issues like unemployment, rising prices, insecurity, education, and people leaving the country to find better opportunities.
This raises important questions:
Can someone known mainly for luxury and nightlife handle serious political responsibilities? Can an image built around wealth and excess truly represent or help struggling young Nigerians?
Some Nigerians are skeptical. Critics argue that appointing people famous for lavish lifestyles to youth-focused political roles feels disconnected from the everyday struggles of most citizens.
The government appears to be using popular influencers to connect with young people by blending politics with pop culture. While this strategy may increase visibility, many Nigerians are questioning what kind of change it will actually bring — and whether youth mobilisation in this case is about real progress or just political branding.
