Adeyeye was convicted after admitting guilt to posting misleading claims online about the couple’s daughter, Deja. In a viral post shared on X (formerly Twitter), he falsely announced her death, writing: “My sincere condolences to the Adekunle family. Rip to Deja.” The post quickly gained traction and sparked outrage across social media.
According to reports, Adeyeye appeared before the court on May 14 and pleaded guilty to charges related to cyberbullying, defamation, and intentionally spreading false information. He was sentenced the following day, May 15, to two years imprisonment.
The case has renewed public debate over misinformation, online harassment, and the growing trend of seeking attention through controversial or fabricated social media content.
The false claim had earlier attracted criticism from several Nigerians, including media personality Do2dtun, who condemned the spread of fake stories involving celebrities and their families simply to gain engagement online.
Following the court’s ruling, reactions on social media have been mixed. While many users praised the judgment as a strong stance against fake news and harmful online behaviour, others said it signals a tougher approach by Nigerian authorities toward cyberbullying and digital misinformation.
The incident also highlights increasing concerns over the spread of false information on X, where celebrity death rumours and fabricated stories often trend before eventually being disproved.
